IMPORTANT
NEW PISTOL LICENSE APPLICANTS
PLEASE NOTE

     Early in 2005, Orange County will start issuing the new plastic, drivers license style of pistol permits. This change will require some minor changes in application paperwork, when you pay for the appliation and how you have your picture taken. I will leave the old form up for a while because many people still have the old style forms.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PISTOL PERMIT APPLICANT
  1. Type or use black ink only in completing the application in Duplicate. DO NOT USE CARBON PAPER.
  2. Start on the line that says "Last Name". Do not fill in thte spaces above the name.
  3. It is extremely important that only one letter or number be placed in a box and ALL questions must be answered before you are fingerprinted. Omission of, or supplying false information constitutes sufficient reason for denial of the application And prosecution.
  4. Reason/s for carrying weapon. (Sporting? Security Guard? Business? Retired Police Officer? etc.)
    Including all supporting documents, i.e. employment letter, good guy letter, business certificate.
  5. Four (4) references are required, unrelated to you and unrelated to each other and who are residents of Orange County. DO NOT USE GUN DEALERS OR SAFETY COURSE INSTRUCTORS AS REFERENCES.
  6. All questions must be answered before you are fingerprinted. Bottom section of long forms are to be signed in front of a Notary Public.
  7. SUBMIT TO THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE: 110 WELLS FARM ROAD, GOSHEN, NY 10924
    Two completed applications.
    Blue Fingerprint card, top portion completed. Arrest affidavit signed and notarized.
    If arrested: Letter by applicant surrounding circumstances of arrest and Certificate of Disposition.
    TWO (2) PASSPORT SIZE PHOTOS -NO sunglasses, NO dark tinted lenses, Photos can be taken at County Clerks Pistol Permit Dept for a fee of $10.
    Four (4) character reference letters, completed by each reference. Signed in front of a Notary.
    One self-addressed legal size stamped envelope.
    $99.00 money order payable to N.Y.S.D.C.J.S. Post office money orders only
    All suporting Documents
  8. All required documents must be delivered to the I.D. officer at the Sheriffs Office. At that time you will be fingerprinted. Fingerprinting hours are on a first come, first servebasis; Monday & Friday, 10:30 to 12:00 noon; the first and third Saturday of each month, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; Wednesdays 3:30 to 7 pm by appointment only. Everything will be handled by the ID Officer from this point. For appointments and questions, call 291-7687.
  9. SPECIAL NOTE TO RETIRED NYCPD: You must supply PISTOL LICENSE INQUIRY FORM (issued by NYCPD) ask for form PD643-155 (5-92)-h2.

PLEASE NOTE:
You will be requested to provide proof of firearms training and receipt of weapon before you are called in for an interview with the Sheriffs Dept. (After the criminal investigation is complete you will be scheduled for an interview). If you have been trained in weapons handling, a signed verfication letter is required.

***WEAPONS MUST BE LISTED ON THE REVERSE SIDE OF APPLICATION IN ORDER TO BE PROCESSED.

  4. Fill in reason/s for carrying weapon. (Sporting? Security Guard? Business? Retired Police Officer? etc.)
  5. Four (4) references are required, unrelated to you and unrelated to each other and who are residents of Orange County. DO NOT USE GUN DEALERS OR SAFETY COURSE INSTRUCTORS AS REFERENCES. On the back of one application please provide telephone numbers and last name for each reference. Place this information at the very top of the long form above the area provided for fingerprints.
  6. All questions must be answered before you are fingerprinted. Bottom section of long forms are to be signed in front of a Notary Public. NOTARY MUST FILL IN BOTTOM RIGHT SECTION.
  7. BRING TO THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT:
    Two applications, completed.
    Blue Fingerprint card, top portion completed.
    Three pictures-NO sunglasses, NO dark tinted lenses, NO polaroid. PASSPORT SIZE ONLY
    Four character reference letters, completed by each reference.
    One self-addressed, stamped envelope.
    $99.00 money order payable to N.Y.S.D.C.J.S. Post office money orders only
    $10.00 money order payable to Orange County Clerk.
    Photocopies of any other supporting papers.
  8. You will then turn everything over to the I.D. officer and be fingerprinted at the Sheriffs Dept. at their new facility, Wells Farm Road. Fingerprinting hours at the Sheriffs Dept. (first come, first serve) are Monday & Friday, 10:30 to 12:00 noon. The first and third Saturday of each month, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Everything will be handled by the ID Officer from this point. For appointments and questions, call 291-7687. On Wednesday, finger printing hours are 3:30- 7:00 pm by appointment only.
  9. SPECIAL NOTE TO RETIRED NYCPD: You must supply PISTOL LICENSE INQUIRY FORM (issued by NYCPD) ask for form PD643-155 (5-92)-h2.

PLEASE NOTE:
You will be requested to provide proof of firearms training and receipt of weapon before you are called in for an interview with the Sheriffs Dept. (The interview takes place after reports come back from New York State). Please inquire about the next available course while you are being fingerprinted. If you have already been trained in weapons handling you will be asked to provide documentation on official letterhead, signed by a qualified official.

YOU WILL NEED A "GOOD GUY LETTER" FROM YOUR DEPARTMENT SEE SAMPLE FOR NYPD

YOU WILL ALSO NEED A PROPERTY CLERKS INVOICE ON YOU WEAPONS IF YOU VOUCHERED THEM AT  THE PROPERTY CLERKS OFFICE.  IF YOU HAVEN'S RETIRED YET AND YOU HAVEN'T VOUCHERED YOUR WEAPONS THEEN WE NEED A LETTER FROM A DEPARTMENT HEAD LISTING YOUR WEAPONS  (MAKE, MODEL, CALIBER, SERIAL NUMBER)

PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOU LIST ALL OF YOUR WEAPONS ON THE BACK OF BOTH APPLICATIONS:
